A Black Scarf for Grandma

Per her request it's soft! I tripled the ends every 1/2 inch or so so that it has a very subtle stripy

effect that doesn't show in the picture becuase it's black and absorbs every bit of light around. Hope you love it Grandma!

2 for 1

I wanted to do a gamp after seeing samples of them in several of the pattern books. A gamp is basically a sampler. You thread rows according to different threadings (in this case 6) and then treadle (weave) using the treadling for each threading patterns, thus creating 6 rows. Two 6X6 gamps were thus created on one warp using harrisville shetland wool. David's is the multicolored one. The red and white one will grace the walls of our living room.

The Next Day...

I can't believe how much better I feel already. These tubes were apparently just what I needed. We did the temporary kind (3-6 months) to see if I like them and if they serve their purpose. By the end of the day I was getting up from my chair and not flexing for balance. I wasn't worried if I turned around really quickly that I'd keep going. I wasn't tentative going down steps for fear that I might tumble on my nose. I didn't get a grumbly feeling in my tummy after I ate.

It's amazing.

I'm still a tiny bit sore today, but really feel great about my ears. I want to dance and try riding a bicycle and do all the things I've avoided for years for fear that I'd fall down. I'm so glad that I don't have to live like that forever!

On a slightly down side, yesterday I felt like I was talking from inside a barrel. That effect is much lessened today and I hope goes away completely, but it isn't enough to make me worried.

Guess What!?!

I got tubes in my ears this morning. Dr. came in, talked with me and David for a few minutes and said, "Do you want to do this?" And I said "yes" thinking it would be a couple of weeks before we scheduled it, but nope, I was moved to the minor surgery room and within 10 minutes I had a tube inserted in each of my ear drums. These are the 3-6 month kind to see if they do the work we want them to...wish me luck. I'll keep you updated.

In the meantime I'm trying to feel better after this stinking cold--it really knocked me low. I finally slept all night without coughing my head off last night.

Sick

Along with about 1/2 the state of Mississippi, I've been really sick this week. While I was at jury duty too...hope I didn't infect my fellow jurors. They won't like me much next month if that's the case. At any rate, it wasn't all that bad this time even if I didn't feel well...and things are getting interesting, so at least there's that.

2 scarves going to Indianapolis

The scarf on the left is made from bamboo, corn and mohair. The pattern is a rose twill. I really like the checkerboard pieces inside the diamonds. The scarf has a nice heft and drape. It's soft--almost cloudy soft--and the mohair added some surprising texture and color. It's very pretty but I'll probably not use the corn in the warp again as it was really difficult to keep the tension right. The scarf on the right is made of the soysilk I've been bragging about. The pattern is a herringbone.

Movie Review: An American in Paris

I don't usually review movies, probably because I don't find very many of them engaging enough to merit a review; however, I fell in love with a new movie last night: An American in Paris.

From the opening scene to the end, I thought this movie was smart, funny, passionate, well written and overall enjoyable. I particularly liked two scenes: when Adam fantasizes about being in his own concert and plays the roles of all the instruments and the dance to An American in Paris, the song by Gershwin.

Costumes, dances, dialog, writing, acting, everything was executed with finesse...I'm sure I'll be watching this one again....in fact, I was sad to have to send it back to Netflix.

A Pair of Scarves Headed to Lubbock

The scarf on the left is made from Southwest Trading Company's soy silk line--called Pheonix. I love it. It is silky soft, drapy and oh-so-pretty. I used both natural and white in the warp to create an antique-y look. The scarf on the right is white and brown wool in a houndstooth pattern.

Happy Valentine's Day to Me!

These came yesterday because, as I mentioned, we have really bad luck actually getting ANYthing delivered on the 14th. Hope you have a wonderful Valentine's Day!

Cotton Linen Blend Towels

A Valentine's gift for David...these cotton and linen towels are absolutely delightful. They are SOFT and very pretty. I can't wait to use them to see how absorbant they are. There are 8 in the set, but I only show 2 here because the others don't show the patterns very well in photos. They are shy I guess.

Valentine's Day is just 2 Days Away!

I always loved Valentine's Day as a kid--any holiday with red as it's main color was my favorite no matter what it celebrated. Getting to sign all those cool little valentine cards and create your valentine box at school was always fun. Then there would be the ceremonial delivery of the cards throughout the day and at the end of the day we always had our Valentine's Day party...which, for some reason, meant freshly popped pop corn, some of those nasty little hearts and cokes.

My daddy was always really good about buying heart shaped boxes of candy which got bigger as I grew older. I loved eating each and every one even if I didn't like the nougat inside. It was always such a nice surprise.

Getting sweet gifts from boyfriends is always good, too, though sometimes turns out funny or wrong. I've written about the balking mule that David bought me one year that flopped and had to be remedied with a giant box of chocolates. In fact, we always seem to have Valentine disasters. Several years running we couldn't get our flowers delivered on time--one year the florist had the worst luck ever with 2 vans breaking down and our delivery didn't happen until 10:30. I think this was our first Valentine's after getting married. The flowers were supposed to be a surprise but when they didn't come he had to tell me that he did indeed buy me flowers but didn't know what happened.

Year before last at my office, our dean forgot Valentine's Day and had the secretaries calling every florist in town to see if they would deliver flowers to his wife. Without luck of course. Don't know how much trouble he was in for that! We laughed about that in the office for days and teased our poor dean. If we had more disposable money we probably would have had some flowers delivered to HIM!

This year David is working and won't be home for Valentine's Day. It'll be fine as he's already given me my presents...yes presentS. This year I got 3 heart charms to complete my collection, whcih brings my total to 11. The possibilities of combinations are endless and will match every single outfit I own. So exciting as I like those sorts of things a lot...

Happy Valentine's Day to everybody. Hope your day is filled with love and laughter!

I wanna go to Wales, too!

Or at least I think that's why he's in the box of goodies we're sending to David's sister.

General Info

The coasters are working great so far. David "loves them"...which he doesn't say about many things.

My ears and allergies are improving. I had a little set-back by getting a sore in my right nostril, but it's almost healed, so I can start back up on the nosespray. Overall, though, I'm noticing a huge improvement in my allergy symptoms and was even told a couple of times that I don't sound like myself anymore.

I'm still totally obsessed with weaving. It consumes my waking hours thinking of new projects and designs...it consumes my sleeping hours thinking of new projects and designs...it consumes my working hours by seeing a few of those designs coming to fruition. It's really been fun so far. I can't imagine it will stop.

I'm not doing well working on my dissertation proposal. Just don't have the focus right now. Hoping to next week.

A set of 11 coasters

Will let you know how absorbant they are but they're awfully cute...and you can understand why they call them "mug rugs"! Just look at them...they look like tiny little carpets!

2 blue and brown scarves

The scarf on the left is in Bronson Atwater lace pattern. The closeup shows the lacy spots. The scarf on the right is a honeycomb pattern. The closeup shows the honeycomb cells.
